Sharon Gibson

Mixed Media Artist

From childhood, Sharon Gibson has been captivated by the natural world, responding with a pencil or brush in hand to capture its beauty. Her artistic journey deepened through exposure to powerful, emotive works by artists such as Graham Sutherland and John Piper, whose influence still resonates in her work today. Pursuing a degree in Art alongside a BEd Honours at Birmingham University, she embraced every opportunity to develop her skills, from studio sessions to inspiring field trips.

With a diploma in Art Education, she spent years teaching and leading schools, organising residential art retreats and working alongside resident artists. These collaborations not only fuelled her own creativity but also honed her ability to break down complex techniques, making them accessible and inspiring for students.

Her passion for learning never waned. Over the years, she has explored acrylics, mixed media, printmaking, and wet felting—what she calls “painting with wool.” Now retired from teaching, she has returned to her first love: drawing and painting. Over the years, Sharon has refined her skills in charcoal and watercolour, leading to exhibitions and private commissions. She has also supported students in developing their techniques, finding immense joy in watching them grow in confidence and skill.

Specialising in landscapes, her work is characterised by expressive mark-making, fluid brushstrokes, and a keen eye for natural textures. She favours watercolour and mixed media to capture both sweeping vistas and intricate details, bringing the essence of nature to life.

As a teacher, she is passionate about inspiring others to embrace their creativity. She breaks down skills into manageable steps, making learning engaging and accessible. Through playful mark-making, colour exploration, and immersive experiences—whether collecting found materials, sketching outdoors, or recalling sensory memories—she encourages her students to develop their artistic voice. Teaching at Arley Studio and beyond, she creates enriching, memorable experiences that deepen the connection between art and nature.
